Dan Brown's thriller The Lost Symbol starts with the following words, which the author quotes from Manly P. Hall's 'Secret Teaching Of All Ages':
"To live in the world without becoming aware of its meaning is like wandering about in a great library without touching the books."
The author does a phenomenal job of marrying together modern science and philosophy (as is his forte). He quotes the following to do so:
"That which is impenetrable to us really exists. Behind the secrets of nature remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion." -Albert Einstein
"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us, what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal." -Albert Pike
The author also puts forward the following thoughts quite emphatically, which made this reader question her own thoughts and ideas:
Sometimes, a legend that endures for centuries, endures for a reason
Since the beginning of time, the ignorant had always screamed the loudest, herding the unsuspecting masses and forcing them to do their bidding.
The spirit craves mastery over its carnal shell
